The Obesity Prevention Foundation Kicks Off Let’s Move Nevada!

A month-long initiative to get families moving

RENO, Nev. (May 13, 2011)- The Obesity Prevention Foundation is on a mission to get families moving. Let’s Move Nevada! – an initiative designed to increase awareness and understanding about childhood obesity – takes place throughout the month of June and provides creative opportunities for parents and children to get active.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children engage in 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity in order to grow up to a healthy weight. Adults should engage in a moderate mix of aerobic exercise and muscle strengthening several days a week.

“Let’s Move Nevada has got to be the top health priority for everybody in the state right now,” said Dr. Kent Sasse, founder of the Obesity Prevention Foundation. “If you really think about the number one health problem for both children and adults, it’s weight gain.”

In order to help families discover fun ways to get fit, Dr. Sasse and the Obesity Prevention Foundation have created the free Let’s Move Nevada! Activity Tour. Families can start the tour with free health screenings and counseling from certified counselors at the iMetabolic. Screenings will be available Wednesday, June 1 through Friday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants can call iMetabolic at (775) 829-7999 for an appointment.

According to experts at iMetabolic, lean body mass is very critical to weight maintenance and basal or resting metabolic rates; 60 to 70 percent of the calories people burn come from this relationship. Knowing how this process works is one of the keys to bringing long-term, successful weight management.

“Greater exercise means less depression, better feelings of energy, better health and less anxiety. There are so many benefits across the board; I can't be more excited about Let’s Move Nevada! kicking off its second year,” said Dr. Sasse.
